We've all been there. You're cooking dinner after a long day at work, in a hurry to make dinner because you are hungry, and suddenly the smoke alarm goes off. To make the beeping stop, you remove the batteries — relief, for now. But the relief is short-lived if you realize that non-functioning smoke alarms are a top home safety hazard. How many of you remmeber to put that battery back in. Is it really worth jeopardizing safety for a moment of silence? Improper placement is the largest cause of people turning off their smoke detectors. Too close to a cooking range or shower can cause it to go off with a false alarm. They should be at least 10 feet from a shower or cooking range because the steam will cause false alarms. Most people have at least one smoke detector but does it work. We recommend checking your smoke detector once a month. Here is a tip, When you get your callender write a note on a certain date in every month saying test the smoke detectors. It is also recommended that you replace them every ten years. When you replace them write the date you replaced them on the smoke detector. The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing your smoke alarm batteries twice each year. An easy reminder is to do this when you change your clocks at the start and end of Daylight Saving Time.
